OVERVIEW - finger lakes bike and wine fall foliage BIKE tour

The Bike and Wine Fall Foliage tour is exactly that - bike riding in the morning and visiting wineries in the afternoon - all while taking in the blaze of Autumn colors in this wonderful geographic region.  This tour is an adaptation of our NY Finger Lakes tour that on average will bike 30-40 miles each morning with options to do more or less riding depending on how ambitious you are feeling.  Lunch on four days will be enjoyed at a winery property.  During the tour we will visit no fewer than 15 of the 100+ Finger Lakes wineries, where you will have the opportunity to sample multiple varieties from award winning winemakers.

Day 1, SUNDAY (Meals - dinner)

Mileage: 15+, flat

Plan to arrive in Rochester, NY in the early afternoon, where you may arrange in advance to have our van bring you from the Rochester International Airport to The Del Monte Lodge hotel in Pittsford, NY or utilize the hotel van shuttle.  If you will be arriving at a different time or your flight is delayed, you must arrange your own transportation to the hotel.  If you are driving, please contact us for directions and parking details.

We will meet as a group to complete bike fittings, conduct a safe bike briefing, and do a short group ride along the historic Erie Canal pathway and suburban secondary roads.  Dinner will be as a group at a local restaurant overlooking the Erie Canal.

Day 2, MONDAY (Meals - lunch, dinner)

Mileage: 34+, mostly flat

Breakfast is on your own this morning in this charming village, as we can recommend multiple options within easy walking distance (one-quarter of a mile) from the hotel.  After breakfast this morning, we use the van to shuttle to the 2015 Best State Park in the US, where breathtaking views of waterfalls and gorges will find you stopping frequently to snap photos while cruising the curving roads.  After taking in the natural beauty of the "Grand Canyon of the East", we shuttle to Conesus Lake, located furthest west of all the Finger Lakes.

After riding mostly flat roads around one of the smaller Finger Lakes, we finish at Deer Run Winery, one of the oldest wineries on this lake and where we will have a picnic lunch.  The next winery on our list is the oldest winery in the area, dating back to the 1870's.  In addition to the long history, this winery is also an opportunity to view bald eagles that nest nearby.  Naples is our next destination, where we visit Inspire Moore Winery.  As we leave Naples and head to our hotel, there is a charming little store to visit that sells grape jams, jellies, pies, and more.  The day ends at the northern end of Canandaigua Lake where the Inn on the Lake is your accommodation for the night.  A fabulous farm-to-table dinner awaits at the New York Kitchen.

Day 3, TUESDAY (Meals - all)

Mileage: 37+, rolling hills, some hill climbing

Today, we begin bicycling mostly flat roads along the western shores of Canandaigua Lake, passing a mix of new and old lakeshore homes, before climbing to see a beautiful view looking back toward our starting point.  We shuttle forward over the hills to Keuka Lake (the uniquely Y-shaped lake) to ride near the western shore on gently rolling roads leading us to Hammondsport, voted the #10 Best Small Lake Town in America in June 2017.

Lunch today is at Bully Hill Vineyards restaurant with tremendous views overlooking Keuka Lake and a palette of autumn colors painted across the eastern hills.  After a Bully Hill tasting experience, we travel north to the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, one of the most notable wineries in the Finger Lakes region, where you are treated with outstanding wines and additional impressive views.  We continue to Penn Yan for a stop at Keuka Spring Vineyards which has received many awards since opening in 1985.  Travelling down the east side of Keuka Lake, we make our way to Ravines Wine Cellars before a lakeside dinner as the sun sets across the water.  The Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel is our accommodation tonight.

Day 4, WEDNESDAY (Meals - all)

Mileage: 36+, rolling hills

After breakfast, we embark by van to the north end of Seneca Lake where our route takes us along the east side of the lake, passing numerous vineyards and wineries, farms, and continuous views of spectacular colors.  Toward the end of today's ride, we pass a great photo opportunity at Hector Falls.  You will have time to return to our hotel before lunch to shower and change.

We head out from the hotel to Red Newt Cellars Winery and Bistro where locally sourced farm-to-table lunch items await.  We also visit Atwater Estate Vineyards and Damiani Wine Cellars on the east side of Seneca Lake before making our way to the west side for stops at Lakewood Vineyards and Glenora Wine Cellars.  You'll have time to enjoy the winery before walking to the Veraisons Restaurant where a refined farm-to-table menu awaits as you overlook the vineyards and Seneca Lake.  Returning to The Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel again tonight, you may choose to walk the Village or just relax by the water.

Mileage: 36+, rolling hills

Cayuga Lake, the longest of all the Finger Lakes, is next to be explored.  Take in the technicolor display while we ride from near Seneca Falls along the western hills to Taughannock Falls State Park, home of the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains; even higher than the world-famous Niagara Falls.  After site-seeing at the Falls, the group heads to the Knapp Winery and Restaurant for a well deserved lunch.

The Buttonwood Grove Winery is our next winery visit before crossing to the east side of Cayuga Lake to stop at Long Point Winery and Treleaven Wines.  We close out the day with free time to explore downtown Ithaca where dinner is on your own.  Tonight we stay at the Ithaca Marriott Downtown, where plenty of nightlife is within easy walking distance if you desire.

Day 6, FRIDAY (Meals - ALL)

Mileage: 32+, rolling hills

Driving out of Ithaca, we see incredible views for miles around as we head to our cycling start location for the morning.  Pedalling from the south end of Owasco Lake, we traverse the hills leading us over to Skaneateles Lake, one of the cleanest of all Finger Lakes.  In the Village of Skaneateles, we'll have lunch as a group and then head back in the van from where we came to Anyela's VineyardsHeart and Hands Wine Company concludes the winery visits.  After dinner in Skaneateles as a group where we'll celebrate the week, there is time to explore the Village of Skaneateles before drifting off at the Sherwood Inn or Packwood House.

Day 7, SATURDAY (Meals - breakfast)

Guests have the option to ride around Otisco Lake after breakfast or spend time visiting shops in the Village.  We drive by van back to the Del Monte Lodge in Pittsford, NY in the late morning where guests have the option to stay over another night (not included in the tour) before departing for home, pick up vehicles left at the hotel, or we will transport you to the Rochester International Airport.  For guests heading to the airport directly, we suggest planning flights for afternoon departure.

Additional information

To reduce knee, shoulder, back, and neck issues associated with longer riding times, it is highly recommended guests bring their own bicycle.  If you need to ship your bicycle, we are able to provide the name of a preferred partner bike shop that will professionally unpack, assemble, prepare your bicycle for the tour, and store the box for use when shipping back home.  Bike shops charge a nominal fee to assemble and prepare a bike and a separate fee to break-down and repack a bike for shipment.  You might also consider self-assembly and break-down of your bike by shipping to your pre-tour hotel.  Most hotels will store the bicycle box during the tour but check beforehand to confirm.

If you prefer to rent a bicycle, please indicate your desire on the reservation form.  There will be a charge associated with renting a bicycle that will be determined at the time of your request and dependant upon the equipment selected.
